THE MAN
Langa (Deepak) was born in Paramaribo a small town in Suriname and was raised as the only child by his mother, like most boys at the time, he sought lots of adventures outside the home during his childhood.
Everyone in Langa’s community had the same basic haircut at the time people generally referred to it as the prison cut, the village barber simply pulled his clipper over everyone’s head making it one height.
The breakthrough
HIS FIRST HAIRCUT
Langa was 15 years old at the time when he was asked by a friend Kries O if he could try to cut his hair. Without hesitation, Langa agreed, with only a pair of scissors, a comb, and a few anxious spectators, that was the haircut that would change Langa’s life forever. It didn’t take long for everyone to realize that the dreaded days of the so-called prison cut were over the community had found its new barber.
Emancipation
A NEW AMBITION
After moving to the neighboring country of Guyana the next stage of Langa’s life began. Strolling through the streets of Nickerie with scissors and combs in his back pocket, Langa worked on his customers where ever sometimes on the roadside or at their homes even at times traveling to other cities in Guyana and French Guiana.
CRAFT
THE FIRST MERITS
Langa’s creativity was put to the test in the Hindustanis village of Windsor Forest located along the coast of the Demerara in Guyana with his growing popularity customers would come from day and night requesting haircuts they saw in magazines and on TV everting for simple cuts to intricate patterns and even their names shaved in their head, it didn’t take long before he developed his own unique style.
On Kanaalstraat
THE FIRST BARBERSHOP
With a clear vision, Langa left Guyana and returned to Suriname settling in West-Kanaalstraat, his newfound fame and reputation preceded him, cutting hair was no longer a hobby it had now become his job. When the weather permitted Langa worked under the coconut tree, this lasted for months on end all the while putting money aside for what was to come next.
“I already saw a future in owning my barbershop”, Langa recalled, less than 1 year after Langa returned to Suriname he built his first barbershop starting the Magic Hairz Barbershop legacy in Kanaalstraat, Suriname.
Today
THE HAGUE
Transitioning from Suriname to the Netherlands was not easy Langa explained, working in various barbershops to get a feel of barbering in the big city, but with a clear goal in mind and his mantra “If I could do it in Suriname I could do it in the Netherlands” Langa made it.
On June 1, 2011, the first branch of Magic Hairz barbershop was opened in the Hague, Langa has since perfected his cutting technique, owning and operating one of the busiest and most diverse barbershop brands in the Netherlands, he is now also a major distributor of Red One products in several countries including the Netherlands and his home country of Suriname.
